Worthy Editorship!
In the last edition of the Staats-Anzeiger, I saw the report by Joachim Both that my father, as well as my siblings are still alive. I had written to them several times but without success. Hopefully, it will get better now.
All of us here are still healthy and we hope the same of them. Herewith I am also ordering the paper for my brother for 1 year. (*Editor: We received the money. We will send him the newspaper.) My brother should now report in the paper on and off.
The weather this year is very mild. It has never been this way during the 10 years that we have lived here in Canada. All the cattle are still outside looking for food.
I am sending a greeting to our dear ones in the old homeland, as well as to Gottlieb Lainz [Leinz] and family. (Note by the translator: could probably be ‘Leinz’ and could be my great grandfather)
I thank Mr. Both very much for the transmission of the report.

Honored Staats-Anzeiger!
One morning here, the people were scared badly when a message was received that fanatics and “Water Apostles” would rush in on bootleggers. They did find a still, and in one place they found a barrel with the good stuff. What will be happening to the poor sinners I am not yet able to say.
Here the burglaries are an everyday occurrence just like in the country from where Mr. Hobbacher writes his reports. Reinhold Tschischmak had the misfortune to lose 100 bushels of wheat through a burglary and Henry Fischer lost 50 to 60 bushels of barley. However, one was able to track down the young thieves and so far one of them has been arrested. A $1,500 bond was posted and he will be free until the trial. There seems to be a whole gang of thieves.
The following people are on the list to be married: Kilian Kuntz, son of Martin will marry a daughter of Jakob Baltin in Emmons County. Anton Tressler, son of Christian will marry a young woman from Dunn County. Heinrich Harsche, son of Georg will marry a young woman from Emmons County. I don’t know the names of the brides.
Emil Kopp is in the St. Alexius hospital in Bismarck right now. He had his appendix removed. Hopefully, he will soon be well again.
I am puzzled that our North Dakota newspapers bring such different reports about the legislature. I trust Mr. Brandt not to leave us in the dark with the truth.
I am asking my friends in Krasna, Bessarabia to write.

Worthy Staats-Anzeiger!
There was a report from Minnesota in Edition #59 of the Staats-Anzeiger that was signed “A Critic”. This gentleman complained about the reports in the Staats-Anzeiger and said he gets unbearable stomach-aches when he reads them. Well, he doesn’t have to read these reports. These reports are not written for critics but for us “dumb” farmers. I also believe that the “old man” of the Staats-Anzeiger doesn’t take orders from Mr. Critic who on top of it hides behind a pseudonym, which is full of holes.
Recently, the following couples were married: Xaverius Hinz, son of Peter to Merzelina Ehresmann, daughter of Johannes, Clemens Ehresmann to Magdalena Bischof. Dionysius Ternes, son of Zachaeus to Ottilia Bonogofsky, daughter of Martin and Joseph Arnold to Josephina Kopp, daughter of Adolf. I wish all the young couples much luck and blessings!
Joseph Menges sold his 320-acre farm for the price of $10,000.
Since yesterday the weather has changed. Now we have snow and cold temperatures.
I greet my brother Zachaeus and my sister Karolina.

As already reported last week, the wife of Daniel Dirk has been hospitalized for treatment since last Wednesday. She had surgery yesterday (Monday). Her husband, Mr. Dirk, was with her all this time. He is thinking about going home.

Worthy Staats-Anzeiger!
I was happy when I received a sign of life from my brother-in-law Oswald. But my address is not Strasburg, but Shields, North Dakota. If he will write to me one more letter, then I will have the Staats-Anzeiger sent to him. Just as long as he doesn’t do as others do after they have received the paper calling out, “Now you can go to the devil!” We are sending the newspaper to our relatives so that we stay in touch with them, exchange opinions, experiences and happiness. This exchange of thoughts must not remain one-sided, but instead must flow from both sides. There cannot be any laziness in writing.
There are several weddings taking place but no one has invited me to any of them. That is not nice. Simon Wagner forgot to send me an invitation. The only one who has sent me an invitation is Georg Hersche, my brother-in-law. Best of thanks for that. The only thing is I cannot comply. But anyhow one can at least notice the good intentions.
Would Mr. Anton Gedak please contact Susanne Miller and find out if the money I sent has arrived yet. The amount was $10. I also had sent $5 once to the old father Michael Hersch.
The need in Krasna cannot be all that big if you have so much wine on tap. Then I should not have the paper sent to Oswald because he’ll get so tipsy from drinking that he will not be able to read it. You should drink more water just like we have to do here in North Dakota.
In closing I greet all friends in the old homeland and also my brother Karl in Canada.
