Worthy Staats-Anzeiger!

We had rain on the 8th and 9th of this month, and on the 10th, it snowed all day. However, today the white blanket is melting. Of course, the rain and snow did bring the threshing machines to a halt. Yet the moisture is very good for the seeded rye.

Around here the harvest has not been very good. In spring, worms did a lot of damage. During the summer we did not get sufficient rain, even though we did have the so-called rainmaker Mr. Hatfield here who tried his best. This gentleman is getting his money in the amount of $8,000 since more rain had fallen by 1 August than the contract had called for. Under next year’s contract he is supposed to get $15, 000. It is hard to believe that there are still people who believe in such shabby tricks. Oh well, I wish a lot of luck for the coming year!

About 2 years ago, a Reverend arrived here who made strong propaganda statements against the Staats-Anzeiger and tried to oust the same and replace it with a different newspaper. This newspaper now is also being read widely in this region. However, the Reverend was “burnt” during an election in the district as a political participant.

(*Editor: Many of our readers that had previously resided in Elardee have also changed their post office.)

There is nothing else new to report from here.

I greet my brother Zachaeus, the readers and the editorial staff.

Respectfully,
Joseph Kopp
