Memories
Besides Bernhard Leinz and I, the following German men from Akkerman County were in our unit: Emanuel Gehring from Alt-Elft; Friedrich Saur from Paris; Christoph Zeller and Michael Fano from Neu-Elft; Jakob Hauser from Taruntino; Samuel Dering and Gustav Zarbock from Wittenberg; the brothers Friedrich and Johannes Stuber and Joseph Flaig from Leipzig; Heinrich Burkhardt from Jakobstal and Daniel Menge from Kulm. In no time at all we had won, if not love, but respect for sure.
Since our situation did not improve Bernhard Leinz and I tried to have our sergeant give us a few days furlough.
During our departure from Odessa we met two soldiers who were also from Krasna, namely Joseph Speicher, son of Nikolaus and Ludwig Bachmeier, son of Johannes. They too had train tickets but no authorized leave documents.
