Dear Editor Brendel:
We have finished threshing and the harvest is about average. Barley brought 80, winter wheat 20, summer wheat 30 and rapeseed 8 Pud per Desjatine. It is just a shame that only 25 Lei are paid per Pud of barley. The corn is still doing fine and the melons are bountiful.
Scarlet fever broke out among the children here. Medics are going from house to house to inspect the children. The 12-year-old daughter of Erasmus Steiert had to be brought to the hospital in Tarutino. Margaretha, the widow of Johannes Dirk suffered a stroke on August 1. – The wife of Basilius Steiert died suddenly of a heart attack on August 2. Her name is Elisabetha nee Haag. She leaves behind her husband and five little children. May God grant them eternal peace.
Three refugees from Russia arrived in Krasna on August 3. They are married men who had to leave their families behind to save their lives by fleeing across the border. So far, they are still free and we think that nothing more can happen to them. They tell hair-raising tales from their villages.
Greetings,
Joseph Braun
(Remarks: The editor received exact news, names and places regarding the refugees. So no misfortune can befall the wives and children they had to leave behind, we will inform their friends. Wherever Mr. Braun supplied addresses, we will release the information through the mails.)
