Dear Editor Brendel:
Fall is here and with it the wine harvest. One can tell people have new wine in their cellars. If one gets bothered in the middle of the night to ask what is going on, one gets the answer, “Why should I sell my wine for 17 Lei/Pud and pay 24 Lei tax per bucket of wine? For that I can drink it myself.”
We had a change in secretaries. Our secretary Stoika was transferred to Klöstitz. Heinrich Mueller from Katzbach, who had been secretary in Klöstitz, came here to Krasna. Mayor Riehl called a community meeting to introduce the new secretary who was warmly welcomed by all. The people were happy to get a German to fill that position.
Our head teacher, A. Gulewitsch, who had been teacher here for 18 years, was transferred to Schabo. His replacement is Otto Schaub from Sarata who will become head teacher since we have long waited for a German.
The corn harvest was excellent and one can see it in the horses. When M. Folk returned from his field a short time ago, his horses ran away tossing him from his wagon. He sustained minor injuries. Georg Steiert had a similar experience. His horses shied when he tried to harness them. They dragged the wagon into the neighbor’s wall. The wagon shattered and the horse galloped down the street with half a harness attached.
The biggest trade right now is in wine barrels which are transported 75 Werst to the west. People from Emmental also come to Krasna for barrels. They had a good wine harvest too. A barrel on loan fetches 5-6 Pud of grapes.
The rainfall of September 21 was of benefit to the winter rapeseed and winter wheat. Barley fetches 20 Lei, oats 27, corn 19, flax 55 and wheat 35 per Pud. Only eggs sell at a decent price. The cooperative pays 170 Lei per hundred and prices are rising as many are exported to Germany.
Krasna merchant August Folk returned from a trip to the Arzis market on September 22. He did not think he had enough to drink and stopped at his brother-in-law’s, Johannes Seifert, to quench his thirst some more. He came home badly beaten and in horrible shape.
Marriages: Widower Basilius Steiert and Martha, daughter of the late Christof Bunikofsky. – Hieronymus, son of the late Gabriel Spitznagel and Anna Herrschaft, daughter of Michael. Best of luck to both couples.
What’s new with Philipp Kahl and Magnus Steinke in Krupp, Sask.? How was your harvest? Write more frequently to the Rundschau! Same goes for Alex Wingenbach in Brisbane, ND.
Greetings to the editor and all readers here and there.
