Initially, land was cheap. In the beginning, people could obtain farms for next to nothing. Rumor has it that half a farm was sold for a pair of shoes or an entire farm for half a quart of liquor. In 1829 a farm with a house cost 1,000 rubles. One has to note, however, that in the beginning the land did not belong to the colonists outright.
