Worthy Staats-Anzeiger!

Now that my brother Zachaeus Kopp is dead, I am cutoff completely from the old homeland. I still have a sister in Krasna, but since she does not have American dollars to exchange, she does not write. That is what you get when you are a poor American.

My brother Zachaeus never did make me feel like that. He always did write a lot. I still have his letters on hand. There are about 100 of them and they are all very long. He never did write short letters - the Staats-Anzeiger can vouch for that! (*Editor: Yes in deed, the blessed Mr. Brother was a diligent correspondent and we will always keep him in our memory.)

In Krasna there still is an uncle who recently had inquired about me in the Staats-Anzeiger. I can inform him that for the time being I am still healthy.

Otherwise, a lot of changes have occurred here. The harvests have been bad the last few years and the farm products are very cheap. To the contrary, everything else is expensive. Whatever the farmers need to buy will bankrupt many of them. It is also impossible to get ahead under such conditions. Everyone that is still around here is hanging onto the end of his rope. This year the harvest was very weak again. The result was 5 to 10 bushels per acre.
