Note: Fragment from a letter dated 18 May from Santa Isabel, Brazil.

We received the sad news about the death of the long-time correspondent Anton Gedak from Mr. Eusebius Hermann, who just like Anton Gedak, is also from Krasna, Bessarabia. That’s life: Man proposes, God disposes! We express our sincere condolences to the mourners left behind.

On 29 April, a freight train ran over the only milk cow belonging to Katharina Foeth, nee Voeller and killed the cow. It was a hard blow for the woman since it was a good cow and cows are very expensive here. They cost 400 to 500 milreis.

On 13 May, Georg and Veronika Dutenhoefer, nee Schmidt from Balmas, Bessarabia arrived here and we were able to once again hear a lot from the old homeland.

Why have our friends in North Dakota and Kandel in Soviet Russia become so quiet? Let us hear from you through the Staats-Anzeiger, which is read here by all our friends.

Yours, Joseph Foeth

Dear Staats-Anzeiger!

Again I want to give a sign of life from this corner of the world so that friends here and over there will know that we are still among the living. We are not among the best, but among the average.

For eight days now, I drive with my family to the city of Lins to a doctor who is treating our three children for tracheitis. My wife has to stay there because the children are still too young. The operation costs 300 milreis and the hotel 10 milreis. According to the doctor they will have to remain there for 20 days. After that they will have to see the doctor once a week for 2 months.

We thank Anna Moldenhauer in Colonsay, Saskatchewan, Canada very much for her reports and ask her to keep on writing diligently. She also should report on how my brother Joseph Wagner is doing. Please say hello to all friends for us, including the brothers Ada and Zachaeus along with their families and the old mother.

What is the reason that Maria Paul has become so quiet and doesn’t write anymore? Likewise, the godfather Jakob Kolb in Bienfait, Saskatchewan, Canada isn’t writing anymore. Please write again in the Staats-Anzeiger and we send you our greetings. Greetings also go to Joseph and Klara Miller and their parents.

We ask the correspondent Adam Seifert in Emmental, Bessarabia to greet our parents because we do not receive any letters from home.

Godfather “Long-Legs” has visited our neighbor Jakob Fleckenstein and has left a tender little daughter to the joy of everyone. In a few days, the baptism will be celebrated.

Six kilometers from here a native woman gave birth to 6 living beings that have the appearance of a “Dadu” (?). The midwife did bury 5 of them right away and kept the 6th one to show it to people.

Wendelin Paul is still sick. This serves to inform his children in Krasna, Bessarabia. Also Johannes, the youngest son of Jakob Weber, they had just arrived here a month ago, has typhoid, but he has improved slightly.

The weather is dry, which is suitable for the coffee harvest that now is going on.

I send a greeting to friends here and there.

Anselmo and Martha Wagner
