Honored Editor Mr. Brandt!

Elisabetha Soehn, daughter of Markus Soehn is the only one on the sick list, but she is now on her way to recovery.

In my previous report, I had mentioned that Mrs. Theresia Becker, nee Ihli and wife of Alexander Becker would probably have to undergo surgery because of an intestinal disorder. However, her ailment was successfully treated with medicines and Mrs. Becker is well again. This serves as a notice to Mr. and Mrs. Ignatz Ihli in Canada.

The conditions are completely different with Mrs. Katharina Dutenhoefer, nee Strubel the wife of Jakob Dutenhoefer descending from Balmas, Bessarabia. She lives about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the town of Lins on the fazenda Sankt Johannes. Because the woman’s condition grew worse from day to day, she was taken to the hospital in Sao Paulo (the state’s capital). She had surgery there on 10 June. Hopefully, the doctors will succeed to bring the patient back to health.

Last week, Joachim Volk who is single returned from the jungle to again work here on the fazenda (plantation). His parents Franz and Franziska Volk along with his siblings are still in the jungle. They diligently work as loggers, which is not an easy job, because the trees are enormously thick and heavy. One has to be extremely careful with this kind of work in order not to get crushed by the falling trees. That is what happened to Peter Klug senior. He was unfortunate and was hit by a falling tree and was seriously injured.

Also poisonous snakes bit several people there. Recently such a snake had bitten Eustachius Meer’s child. The kid was saved because medical aide was readily available.

We were happy to read in the Staats-Anzeiger the report by Bernhard Eisenmenger, son of Anton from Kandel, Soviet Russia. If I am not mistaken, then Bernhard and I are related. If so, then I sincerely greet him. Maybe Bernhard will be so kind and urge our Uncle Valentin and Aunt Magdalena Schmalz to write sometime again. With this mail we are including a letter to him and hope to receive a reply.
