Dear Staats-Anzeiger:

Mr. Isidor Leinz must have misunderstood my previous report concerning the economic situation in our village, which also led to altercations.

The three arguing individuals, about which I reported, almost beat each other to death because of fodder. The doctor has somewhat restored Basilius Steiert’s health again, but by far not to his original appearance. And certainly the money caused Georg Ternes to return from Akkerman. But the court action is far from over. Basilius will not let the matter pass silently. He will want to get paid for the blows he received. Furthermore, Georg will have to spend six months in jail for his deeds or in lieu pay for them.

I have heard that Joseph Braun has sent lies from here to the Dakota Rundschau (newspaper). This paper is not printed in Dakota but in Winona, Minnesota. Apparently he gets paid for degrading me in the aforementioned paper.

The health conditions are satisfactory. Nonetheless, the angel of death recently entered our house and brought great sorrow. Our dear father Ignatz Becker suffered a stroke that affected his entire body. After a brief suffering and receiving the Holy Sacraments, he died on 16 August. He was 68 years old and left our mother, me and five daughters in deep sorrow. Two of the daughters are still single. (*Editor: We convey our sincere condolences.) This serves to inform his brother-in-law Rochus Ternes with wife Marianna and family near Raleigh, North Dakota and also his brother-in-law Heinrich Ternes with wife Nathalia and children in Brazil.

Johannes P.Volk died on 15 August of consumption at 30 years of age. He had been sick for over a year. He left his wife and two minor children.

Elizabetha Steier, nee Haag died unexpectedly at the end of July. She was 33 years old and left her husband Basilius Steier and four small children. This is to inform her Uncle Thomas Haag in Canada. The bereaved husband with the children is in great poverty.

Now I greet Ferdinand Kamm and family in Rosefield, Saskatchewan, Canada and let him know that I have answered his inquiry by letter. Where is he now with his reply?

In closing, I greet the editor Mr. Brandt and his helpers, and also my Uncle Rochus Ternes in Raleigh, North Dakota and Heinrich Ternes in Brazil including their families.

Severin Becker
