Prussia received larger Polish territories in three steps during the partitions of Poland.
Immediately after the first partition of Poland in 1772, Frederick the Great began to settle West Prussia and the Netzegau around Bromberg, which had fallen to Prussia. The immigrants came from various German lands, but especially from Württemberg and Baden-Durlach.
By the second partition of Poland (1793) Prussia gained as a further immigration area the area west of the Vistula named as “South Prussia “ as well as Danzig and Thorn.
In the third partition of Poland in 1795, the area east of the Vistula, combined into the province of New East Prussia, and the areas north of Kraków, designated as New Silesia, were added.
