Dear Staats-Anzeiger!

Recently two dairies were established in our village. Albertus Riehl and Simon Volk, son of Anton, together operate one of them and Scheel Moise from Paris set up his business at Ludwig Braun’s location.

Fridolinus Arnold who resides here says hello to his Uncle Sebastian Kahl and his sons Zachaeus, Lorenz, Nikolaus, Balthasar, Korbinian and Philipp Kahl along with their wives and children. They all live in the Shields area. He asks for correct addresses so that he can write to them. Friedolin, his wife Elisabetha and children are still healthy. His father and his mother Marianna died several years ago, about which I had written in the Staats-Anzeiger at the time.

The nights are still a little long and thieves are also still diligently at work. They stole 75 pud of barley from Dionysius Dressler and Kornelius Koch. Dressler lost 60 pud and Koch lost 15 pud. The barley was not stolen at their homes, but from Magnus Ternes’ farm located in the “Schaak”. I send a friendly hello to Moritz Streicher in Kleinliebental in South Russia. We have read his report dated 12 December in the Staats-Anzeiger. Thank you very much Mr. Streicher! Perhaps you could let us know how the priest Theobald Kopp in Strassburg is doing. We received his letter dated 4 February on 19 February. The letter was not very long, only stating that he was still healthy and that we should pray for him. Maybe you also could let us know something about the priest Furch.

Joseph Hein, son of Philipp Hein died here on 3 February. He was 29 years old. He left his deeply distressed wife, a nee Leinz, daughter of Kasimir, and one child.

Peter Volk, son of Mathias, died suddenly on 11 February. He was 65 years old and left his wife Marianna, nee Kaufmann, and several children who are all married. Around 4 o’clock in the afternoon he had gone to the storage area with a bucket to fetch some whole wheat flour, but when he did not show up for the evening meal his wife became worried and asked the children about their father. When they told her that he had gone to the storage area with a bucket, she sent a son to check on the father. The son found his father dead next to a pile of grain. One assumes that he had died of a heart attack. His 85-year-old father died in a fire on 30 September. May they rest in peace and may the perpetual light shine upon them!

Dear Staats-Anzeiger!

I now can give the information to Anselmus Wagner he had asked for. Zelestinus Loeb works in the community dairy. Izkowitsch, the Jew also still operates a dairy. Alexander Nagel, son of Dominik and Magnus Seifert are employed at the community store. The latter also serves as the sexton.

Anselmus, your assumption that the young men have taken over the senior leadership in Emmental is correct. The young David Gross is the mayor.

I can tell you further that Johannes Bogolowski and PhilippVolk have sold all their belongings and hope to start their trip from here to Canada after a month’s time. Johannes has sold his farm to Edmund Gross, son of Simon for 35,000 lei. Philipp Volk has sold his vineyard to Rochus Nagel for 20,000 lei. Joseph Nagel intends to immigrate to the praised Brazil in a month from now. Dewald Loeb also wants to immigrate to Canada. Joseph Nagel has sold his farm to the community for 54,000 lei. The community farm behind Melchior Dirk was auctioned off for 23,000 lei. The owner now is Magnus Kopp.

A friendly hello goes to Joseph and Cousin Leogata Kupfer. Dear cousin, I send a report to the Staats-Anzeiger every month, but not all are published. They probably got lost.

Well, Mr. Rochus Paul, please send me an answer to my letter. We send the best greetings to you Mr.and Mrs. Paul.

During the winter, many chickens have been stolen. Last night, five of Mrs. Katharina Kopp’s turkeys were stolen. The thief was Bertha (a German), the wife of the shepherd. She was caught along with a Moldavian by the name of Hornes from Kainari, to whom she had sold the turkeys. Both were arrested. The thief, Mrs. Bertha, is a German, and nee Bauer from Grossliebental, Soviet Russia.

Uncle Franz is hereby informed that his pictures have arrived. Uncle Joseph and Uncle Saferi each received a picture, but you have forgotten your sister Elisabetha. You always ask if she is still alive. Uncle Franz, you people in Canada know very well that she is still alive, but you just don’t want to be concerned with her. Not only is that not nice, but also a disgrace. The man in Canada hit the nail right on the head when he said; “Adam, you are better off buying yourself some tobacco for the 10 lei you spend on postage for a letter to your friends in Canada. Then at least you have something to smoke for four days. Your friends here in Canada don’t even think about you for four minutes.”

Saferinus Maas who lives here is asking Johannes Seifert in Canada to please order the Staats-Anzeiger for him. Mr. Seifert had promised Saferinus that upon his arrival in Canada he would send him a present. Hopefully, Johannes will now keep his promise.

Dear Staats-Anzeiger!

I am sending a greeting to the correspondent Adam Seifert in Emmental, Bessarabia and am asking him to report often. We are always curious to hear what is going on in the old homeland.

Zachaeus Ternes, son of the deceased Zachaeus, married the young lady Elisabetha Kopp, daughter of Johannes Kopp. The wedding took place in Prelate, Saskatchewan on 3 March. We wish the couple lots of luck and God’s rich blessings for their life together.

In closing, we say hello to all friends among the large Staats-Anzeiger family, especially to our Godfather Zachaeus Kopp in Emmental, Bessarabia.
