Dear Editor Brendel:

I am happy to tell you that the spring crops of barley and summer wheat are looking great. The winter wheat stands tall and we are all hoping that God will give us a bountiful harvest.

The prairie dogs (Erdhasen) are a pest and the mayor has ordered all of us to work on getting rid of them. Some farms have to supply two and three workers for this task in accordance with how much land one owns. The people without land have to help as they too own livestock that grazes on common lands.

Anton Gedak died on April 4 at the age of 60. He leaves behind his wife and grandson. May God give him eternal rest!

Today we had another general meeting of the cooperative and discussed the matter of the vendor. Rochus Fenrich has originally vouched for the old salesman, Nikolaus Kelsch, but took his word back and Kelsch had to abdicate. I took the job and my commission will be 2.5% of the gross. I have to pay back 1,000 Lei of my monthly income to cover any eventual store losses at the end of the year. The merchandise is worth 371,121 Lei. We hope for the best.

(*Editor: Good luck with the new post, greetings.) In spite of the added workload, I will continue to file my weekly reports every Sunday.

We cannot complain about the weather. Enough rain. Grain prices are too low. Barley brings 28 Lei and corn 40 Lei/Pud; yet, a Pud of flour runs 180-200 Lei. Greetings to the editor and staff, and the readers.

Joseph Braun
