4.7.3 Prices for economy goods in Bessarabia 1814-1940
Land Prices
Initially, land was cheap. In the beginning, people could obtain farms for next to nothing. Rumor has it that half a farm was sold for a pair of shoes or an entire farm for half a quart of liquor. In 1829 a farm with a house cost 1,000 rubles. One has to note, however, that in the beginning the land did not belong to the colonists outright. Prices for livestock and agricultural products
(Prices always fluctuated; there were many ups and downs)

| At inheritance divisions around 1830 estimates were3): | |

| 3 mother sheep | = 10 ruble bancos. |
| According to a community report of Wittenberg from 1848 prices were for | |
| 1833 one cow | 14-15 ruble silbers, |
| 1847 one cow | 7-8 ruble silbers, |
| 1818 one tschetwert wheat only | 1.5-2.5 ruble silbers, |
| 1833 one tschetwert wheat | 6-9 ruble silbers, |
| 1847 one tschetwert wheat | 5-6 ruble silbers. |
| In 1854 one received for | |
| Four mother sheep | = 6 ruble silbers, |
| One cow | = 10 ruble silbers. |
| In 1921 one paid for | |
| One horse | 10,000 lei, |
| One cow | 2,500 lei, |
| One pud of wheat | 40 lei and oats 25 lei. |
| In 1929 costs were: | |
| winter wheat | 120 to 140 lei/pud; |
| barley | 42 lei/pud, |
| corn | 40 lei/pud, |
| butter | 35 lei/pfund, |
| ten eggs | 24 lei, |
| one kilogram of beef | 25 lei. |
