CONSECRATION OF THE NEW CHURCH IN SELFRIDGE, NORTH DAKOTA ON SUNDAY, 19 JUNE 1932

(Note: A picture of the church is printed in the original newspaper article. Below the picture it reads :)

The picture shows the new Catholic St. Philomena Church in Selfridge, North Dakota, which will be consecrated with special celebrations on Sunday, 19 June 1932.

Catholics from the entire Missouri Valley, among those also many readers of the Staats-Anzeiger will get together on Sunday, 19 June 1932 to be present at the consecration of the new St. Philomena Church.

The town’s pastor Bonifazius Simmen, O. S. B., who has been the pastor for the community since 1924 has planned an extensive and colorful program for the festivities. For years he has worked diligently on gathering the necessary funds for the construction. The community and the surrounding areas are indebted to him for his untiring work towards the building of this splendid church, the pride of the small town of Selfridge, yes, even of the entire Missouri valley.

Most of the donations came from wealthy people in the eastern states. Pastor Simmen mailed close to 100,000 letters to people outside of the state.

The St. Philomena parish is comparatively young and was founded in 1916 by Pastor Bernhard out of Fort Yates, when the now flourishing town of Selfridge consisted only of two small buildings. A few years later, after masses were conducted in the school building, a wooden church was built, which now gave way for this new, large and magnificent massive built church.

The main floor of the church was completed in November 1929 and was consecrated on 17 November of that year by Pastor Bernhard. He also blessed, with the attendance of other pastors, the cornerstone on Pentecost, 24 May 1931.

Now the big job is finished and it will be consecrated on the above mentioned date bringing praise to God.
