4.1.7 Hunting and Fishing

It is said that in the initial decades of the colony, wolves did much damage among the livestock, especially targeting calves and foals. By order of the Welfare Committee, yearly wolf hunts were organized in April or May with horse and wagon. Wolves became rare in the German colonies around 1890.

The chronicles of Alt Posttal and Beresina (both neighboring villages of Krasna) report about the hunt. The author has not found evidence of larger hunts in Krasna. Josef Erker still remembers rabbit hunts his father organized. Hunts were leased out in later years and the person in charge of the leases lived in Tarutino.

According to various sources the steppe rivers had few fish and the reason for this was that creeks and rivers dried up in the summer months. Still there were several people in Krasna, mostly youngsters, who managed to make their own fishing gear and catch fish in the Kogälnik.
