Dear Publisher and Staff!

It is my honor to report that I am now receiving the Staats-Anzeiger, gifted to me by my friend Michael Volk. Please do thank him from the bottom of my heart. (*Staff: We will ship the new wall maps as soon as they are ready.)

Not much new here. We had an excellent harvest with 80-110 pud per desjatine for winter wheat, 10-30 pud per desjatine of summer wheat, 70-90 pud per desjatine for barley and oats. We have plenty of straw as well. The corn is excellent and so are the potatoes. There is little wine though, since the vines were almost bare of leaves since July. So what little wine there is, will be tart.

Day laborers and hired help were very dear this year. They earned 1 ruble, 50 kopecks to 2 rubles per day. Paid hands for the seasonal harvest and the threshing earned 90-115 rubles. Even with money, begging and many good words, it was really hard to find help.

We had nice weather up to now. It rained October 1 through 10. The winter planting is finished, and with the Lord’s blessing we may have a great harvest next year

Sudden Death! As the mill was going full steam, machinist Herrmann Schäfer was lubricating the machinery and gears of the steam mill in Tarutino at about 6:30AM on October 7. The wheels latched onto his clothing. He was crushed and lifeless on the floor in a matter of seconds, mangled beyond recognition. He leaves a wife and seven children. The widow of the hapless man and the mill owner settled the damages for a sum of 1,100 rubles.
