4.1.5 Forest plantations

When the colonists of Krasna arrived in the valley of their future colony, they found practically a treeless steppe. The steppe landscape of the Bochak had always been unwooded. The welfare committee recognised early on the value of tree plantations for the climate of the steppe landscape. The colonists were called upon to reforest. Seedlings were provided by the authority. The colonies had to report regularly on the status of the plantations. The authorities carried out inspections. Colonists who did not comply with the obligation to plant trees were punished.
The instructions for the colonists contained appropriate regulations:

  • The territorial chiefs and Schulzen “…are strictly enjoined to take all pains and care that trees are sown in every colony…” “The planting of fast-growing woody species, such as alder, willow, aspen, and other woody plants, is to be strictly forbidden. Alder, willow, aspen, are to be given special attention…”
  • “To protect against storms and fires, houses, barns and courtyards must be planted with all kinds of fast-growing trees…”.

A woodland was also planted early on in the Krasna parish. Acacias1), ash, elm and poplar trees were planted. This forest parcel then fell to the neighbouring colony of Katzbach when the land was ceded on the occasion of the departure of the Protestant colonists.
By order of the authorities, trees also had to be planted along the street walls in the village and along the main paths to the neighbouring villages; these were also mainly acacias.
After the dissolution of the welfare committee in 1871, the authorities gave up the supervision of the forest plantation. Forest maintenance was then neglected. The woodland outside the villages had almost completely disappeared before and especially during the First World War.

Under Romanian administration, something was done again in the 1930s. The district's chamber of agriculture supported reforestation campaigns and provided seedlings. Krasna's neighbouring municipality Friedenstal made use of this help and reforested some areas. Whether Krasna also took advantage of this offer could not be determined. In any case, according to the 1940 sketch of the parish, there were two small woods, the lower wood and the upper wood. It was not possible to find out when they were created.
