5.4.3 The Agricultural Club “Colonist”

Experts realized at the beginning of the 1920's that the agricultural effort of the Bessarabian Germans had to become better focused. In spite of land purchases, small and very small operations came into being. The Russian agricultural law and, after the annexation, the even stronger Rumanian laws, undermined and made the opportunity of acquisition of land outside of the German villages much harder. New means had to be found to increase agricultural profits. This was the task of the German-Bessarabian farm association called “Kolonist” (Colonist), which was founded at the end of 1926. This organization also assisted with the acquisitions of agriculture machinery and implements.

A village affiliate opened in Krasna in 1929, but there were no visible positive changes to agriculture in Krasna. Perhaps the time span during which it operated was too short for this. Just the fact that it existed in Krasna shows a certain awreness of the existing problems. This was not true for all the neighboring villages; the chronicle of Wittenberg notes that the farm association could not get established there.
