4.1 Agriculture

From the beginning of the settlement until almost 100 years later, the German settlers were predominantly occupied in agriculture. In Krasna, there were still more than 90 percent of the residents involved in agriculture in 1940. Agricultural beginnings were modest. The majority of the land was left as pasture. There was a lack of everything, from agricultural equipment to the types of grain, fruit and vegetables suited for the local climate. The colonists had to familiarize themselves with the local conditions. As knowledge increased, agriculture, gardening and wine and fruit cultivation developed. A small forest was begun. People raised horses, cattle, pigs and poultry. All of these were present in Krasna. In spite of all achievements one has to admit that agriculture in Bessarabia (as in the eastern European area overall) did not measure up to the standards of western Europe. On the other hand, compared with villages of other nationalities, the German colonists were leaders in the field. It was due in part because of their work that Bessarabia grew into the grain chamber of the vast Russian Empire 1))

A good illustration of Bessarabian agriculture can be found in the publication written by Dölker, Johann, 125 Jahre Landwirtschaft in Bessarabien (125 Years of Agriculture in Bessarabia
