4.1.3 Fruit cultivation

The colonist home usually also had a large garden and a part of it was planted with potatoes and vegetables. Fruit trees were planted further in the back.

In the first years after settlement the Welfare Committee assured that each farmer planted fruit trees. The government provided the plants but after the Welfare Committee was abolished fruit trees and their care diminished.

According to old documents all 114 farms of Krasna had fruit orchards. People raised apples, pears, cherries, apricots and plums, to name a few.
The saline soils were also not conducive to growing fruit and fruit cultivation never had an economical impact. Hardly any pure stock was planted and not much care was given to the effort. The harvest went to personal use or was preserved in conserves, such as jams and jellies or dried.

The frost of the cold winter of 1928/1929 destroyed many fruit trees in Krasna. Not many new trees were planted afterwards with the reasoning that new frost may do more damage. There was also no market for fresh fruit and preserves were not yet an option.
