5.2 The school in Krasna

When the German colonists arrived, rural Russia did not have any schools to speak of. Given these circumstances, it is remarkable that the colonies had schools virtually from the beginning. Until the end of the 19th century, the Ukrainian or Moldavian villages had often no schools at all.
In comparison with today’s curriculum, the educational standards of the colonist school 1) were not very high, but one thing was accomplished, there were no illiterates to speak of.
The educational standards of the Germans were markedly higher than those of the surrounding foreign nationals. In 1897 the rest of Russia still had 78% illiterates among their populations, whereas the colonists in the German community almost all were able to read and write German.

The school system of Bessarabia was most likely a bit more complicated than outlined here, but Krasna just had a simple village school. One has to consider that during the first fifty years, the school was under the supervision of Polish priests, who did not know German. It was an achievement that there was a school at all.

From the beginning of the colonization in 1814 until the revolution of 1917 church and school had a close relationship. The Russification of the school system began in 1881. The German school was even more endangered during the Rumanian administration 1918-1940.
In Russian times girls and boys were not segregated as they were in the Rumanian system.

The History of a German Bessarabian Village

1)
Noted by Hugo Häfner in Bessarabiendeutsche Schulgeschichte (Bessarabian School History) in Heimatkalender 1993 der Deutschen aus Bessarabien (Homeland Calender 1993 of the Germans from Bessarabia): It is a fact that the school was simple, not without flaws, but still a unique institution and far ahead of the rest of rural Russia.
